COMMENT

There are enormous benefits to living in a mixed race relationship. Many Thai-UK partnerships exists between the two countries with frequent travel back and forth.

Whle the broad picture of Thai-British relations is positive - the interest in Thai cuisine and growing business links between the countries - it can hide more subtle challenges which exist for Thai people settling in the UK and for British living in Thailand. Children growing up with parents from both countries don't always find it easy to fit in. In Thailand they are often the focus of attention as a 'look-krung' whereas in England they are often assumed to be Chinese. The information on this page points to resources and organisations that focus on living in a cross-cultural relationships.

Thai embassy offers free language courses (in Bahrain)

Learning ThaiOct 2007 - Thai-uk.org has written to the Thai Ambassador in London asking for his views on the teaching of Thai in the UK. In August this year the Thai embassy in Bahrain announced plans to set up a language course so Thai children living in the country will not forget their native tongue. According to reports in the Gulf Daily News, children aged three to 16 years will benefit from the lessons which will be free of charge and run every Friday.

"We know of about 30 Thai children living here and while they can speak Thai they cannot write as well as they should," an embassy spokesman told the Gulf newspaper.
